Skating away in Lake Placid

Q+A with Jason Wong

Last week, the first guest skater of the season performed at the July 3rd Saturday Night Ice Show. Jason Wong, Collegiate skater for the United States, sat down to discuss his past season, his current goals, and how he enjoyed skating in Lake Placid.

Q: Did you compete this past year? How did your season play out?

A: I competed at the National Collegiate Championships, which I won. Then I placed second at the Sectional Championships and 10th at the National Championships.

Q: Obviously you are also a college student-how is your school experience?

A: Actually I already graduated from Emmanuel College with a degree in Graphic Design and Technology.

Q: What are your plans for next season?

A: I will be competing at the Liberty Competition first (note: one of the non-qualifying competitions frequented by National and International level skaters, a proving ground for the coming season), not this coming week but the week after. I am excited to try out my new long program; hopefully I will receive International assignments, but I’m just taking everything one step at a time.

Q: Fun question; what is your favorite figure skating move and why?

A: My favorite skating move….that’s a tough question. I would have to say anything that doesn’t involve a toe-pick. If there were no toe pick moves I would be all set!! I don’t like elements with toe picks because I feel they hinder the feeling of total freedom, which is what I like most about skating.

Q: How are you enjoying your trip to Lake Placid?

A: I love Lake Placid – it is absolutely one of my favorite places to visit. I was hoping to stay longer for the Fourth of July festivities but have to leave on Sunday.  I like it so much here that I plan to bring my skating students to skate and train for a few weeks next year.

We wish him the best of luck for the coming season; for more about Jason, visit his website at http://www.figureskatersonline.com/jasonwong/.

This week’s Saturday Night Ice Show will feature National Pairs competitors Chloe Bautista and Tyler Harris.
