KEENE VALLEY — George K. McClelland was born in 1919 in New Haven, Connecticut. He summered in Glenmore in Keene where he developed his life long love for the Adirondacks.
George graduated from Groton School in 1938 and Yale University in 1942 where he excelled academically and athletically. He served his country as a Marine fighter pilot, flew Corsairs in the South Pacific and was a flight instructor at Quantico. Following his honorable discharge with the rank of Major, George attended Johns Hopkins University where he studied International Business Relations. He held positions with Pan American Airways, the Civil Aeronautics Board, the Hoover Commission and O. E. McIntyre, an advertising firm on Long Island. He married Jane Edwards on June 24, 1950.
George’s real calling was teaching and coaching and he spend most of his career at Greenwich Country Day School in Connecticut doing just that while enjoying his summers with family in Keene Valley. He eventually became the dean of studies and then retired after a brief stint as Headmaster. He moved to Keene Valley where he built The Mountaineer in 1975 with his and Jane’s close friends Sid and Kay Miller.
His wife Jane died in October of 1991.
George served on several boards including the Keene Central School Board and the Keene Valley Neighborhood House. He was a mediator and a volunteer for Hospice.
George went through life with vim and vigor always looking forward with an eye toward the next adventure. He had a unique blend of intelligence, integrity and grit and was the ultimate family man who loved nothing more than being with his family hiking, skiing, bird hunting, splitting wood, playing tennis, fishing, burning brush, reading and playing with dogs.
George is survived by his partner of 18 years, Shirley Twitchell and his sons Vincent and his wife Barbara McClelland, George K. McClelland Jr. and his partner Barbara Jean Reed, Scott E. and his wife Tracy Smith McClelland and Duncan and his wife Harriet McClelland. He was particularly proud of his grandchildren: Scott, Mathew, Sophie, Megan, Jane, Zander, Madeline and Merritt.
A service was held at the Keene Valley Congregational Church in Keene Valley Saturday, Oct. 9 with a celebration immediately following at the Keene Valley Country Club.
