CANANDAIGUA — John L. Pettinger, 100, formerly of Keene, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010 at M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua.
Mr. Pettinger was born in Peru, N.Y., and attended school there. He worked as a tool and die apprentice and later as a self-employed tool and die maker. He also worked for the General Electric Company for 20 years as a model maker and design engineer in Schenectady. Mr. Pettinger was also an inventor.
He enjoyed hunting, the outdoors and photography. He was also a gun maker and a longtime member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Pettinger was an avid gardener and horticulturist, and he won many “Green Thumb” awards in the Champlain Valley.
He is survived by three daughters: Doris (Kevin) Prior of Clifton Park, Carol (Lyman) Vincent of Alaska and Gail Pettinger of Albany; three sons: Richard (Peggy) Pettinger of Oklahoma, Robert (Florence) Pettinger of Florida and John F. (Carole) Pettinger of Naples; 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters: Theresa (Wilson) Matthews of Honeoye Falls and Shirley (Robert) Wart of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie Pettinger in 1997.
There will be no calling hours. Services will be held in the spring at a date and time to be announced.
