DUNEDIN, Fla. — Horst Lichtenberg, 78, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, under the kind care of Florida Hospice Foundation at Brookside in Clearwater. Horst resided between homes in Florida (winter) and Keene Valley/Lake Placid (summer). He was born in Brooklyn on March 2, 1932, the son of the late Carl and Elsa Lichtenberg. Horst was a United States Marine Corps Veteran, a graduate of SUNY Oswego and a retired administrator of Keene Central School in Keene Valley. He also operated, with his wife, Olympic Heights, a tourist home on the edge of Lake Placid, for nearly 50 years. Horst is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlotte of Keene Valley; two sons: Carl (Sheri) Lichtenberg from Iselin, N.J. and Reiner Lichtenberg from Glendale, Ariz.; grandchildren: Tyler and Brittany Lichtenberg, also from Iselin, N.J.; cousins: Ingrid (Hans) Schornstaedt and Walter (Linda) Lichtenberg; brothers-in-law: Michael (Jean) Zelezniak and Richard (Betty) Abbott; sister-in-law Virginia Coleman; and several nieces and nephews. Horst was predeceased by a sister, Ingeborg Nieder. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12 at the Keene Valley Congregational Church. Burial will be at the Norton Cemetery in the town of Keene at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Veteran Charities or the Town of Keene, American Legion Post 1312.
