Lake Placid News
GREER, S.C. — Geraldine Beeman Chapman of Greer, died April 18, 2011.

Geri was born to the late Clayton and Elizabeth Beeman on March 17, 1935 in Lake Placid, N.Y. She married the late Willard Chapman in Homestead, Fla. in 1959. They enjoyed 29 years of marriage before his passing in 1988.

Geri was an active member of her church and was devoted to her family, friends and community. She traveled the world and delighted in planning gatherings and adventures for friends and community members.

Her childhood home of Lake Placid, N.Y. was the location she always considered to be her home. Geri graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1952. Her love of Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain has influenced later generations of her family to share her passion for the area. Geri made a habit of returning to Lake Placid at least once a year, and her family has a tradition of gathering for reunions in the welcoming tranquility of the Adirondacks, a custom they are to continue. Geri fulfilled schoolgirl musings of an exciting adult life. She married the man she loved. She created the family she wanted and lived her life without fear, always curious and ready for an adventure. She traveled to the mountains of New Zealand, Soviet-era Russia, the beaches of Brazil and too many other spots to recount. She raised her family in locations throughout North America, most exotically in Goose Bay, Labrador. Her children spent most of their school years in Rome, N.Y. where Geri was a happy homemaker and, as always, active and beloved in her community. It was in Rome that she hosted yearly family reunions coinciding with the celebration of the new year, strengthening the familial bonds of generations of the Beeman side of her family. Geri spent her final years in the Carolinas, a part of the country she grew to love throughout the years visiting her husband’s relatives. Willard Chapman, her husband, was a southern boy from Hickory, N.C. He would be pleased to know that his adored wife spent her final years embraced by the charm of the South, where she enjoyed her life to the fullest with family and friends. Geri’s remains will be joining her husband’s at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

Geri is survived by three children, a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law: Diane Anderson and her husband Michael of Greenville, Jeffrey Chapman and his wife Silvia of Rome, N.Y., and Todd Chapman of Greer; two grandchildren: Bryce and Chase Anderson; a sister: Joanne LaTart and her husband Alan of Texas; a sister-in-law: Connie Beeman, wife of the late Rev. Bill Beeman of Delaware; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: Dr. Edwin Chapman and his wife Martha of North Carolina and Eulan Rhoney of North Carolina; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and other cherished relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 3 at Covenant United Methodist Church in Greer.

Flowers accepted or contributions may be made in Geri’s memory to Covenant United Methodist Church, 1310 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, SC 29650.
