LAKE PLACID — Blanche McCasland, 105, of Lake Placid, died June 26, 2011.
She was born March 1, 1906, the daughter of Leon Tousley and Essie Lawrence.
She was valedictorian in the Class of 1923 and was the oldest living Lake Placid High School alum. She worked many years at the Lake Placid Club and a few years for the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce. She was very active with the Lake Placid Senior Citizens and, at one point, was Senior Citizen of the Year. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Blanche enjoyed rides in the car, fishing, and her fond memories of racing trotter and pacer horses. In her lifetime, she had the privilege of meeting five U.S. presidents. Last year, she recited the Gettysburg Address from memory in front of two of her great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her sister Leona Williams of Rochester; her daughter Catherine Nugent; three sons: James McCasland, Norman McCasland and his wife Linda, and Edward McCasland and his wife Kay; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
Blanche was predeceased by her parents Leon Tousley and Essie (Lawrence) Tousley; her husband Norman J. McCasland in 1974; her sister Catherine Bushey; two daughters-in-law: Gloria McCasland and Eunice McCasland; a son-in-law, Pete Nugent; a granddaughter, Valerie McCasland; and a great-grandson, Coleman Morford.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 19 at the North Elba Cemetery. The Rev. Patrick O’Reilly will officiate. It will be followed by a celebration of her life at the home of her son Edward McCasland, 341 Mill Pond Drive, Lake Placid, from 1 to 4 p.m. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.
