SARANAC LAKE — The Lake Placid girls cross country team got tangled in two very close races Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Saranac Lake High School.

Led by freshman Nina Armstrong, the Blue Bombers girls edged Saranac Lake 27-29, but were defeated by Northeastern Clinton by a 26-29 score.

In leading Lake Placid to a split, Armstrong was the only runner to break the 22-minute mark in the girls race, finishing in 21:58. Justine Rabideau of NCCS placed second in 22:56 and Elena Beideck finished third in 23:05 for Saranac Lake.

Seventh-grader Gabby Armstrong of Lake Placid placed fourth in 24:48 and Zoe Tyler of Saranac Lake rounded out the girls top five with a 25:08 finish.

Anna Izzo of Lake Placid placed sixth in 25:12.

Claire Hipko and Laura Bechard helped the Cougars girls claim the sweep as they crossed the line in seventh and eighth place.

For Saranac Lake, Grace Sullivan finished in 27:18, Kaleigh Woodruff crossed the line in 28:38, Jacinda Riggs finished in 29:11, Alycia Woodruff finished in 29:25, Sierra Nye finished in 30:10, Cameron Leib broke the tape in 31:19 and Katie Buck finished in 32:53.

For the Lake Placid girls, Glenice Gallagher crossed the line in 28:31 and Molly Smith finished in 32:30.

A season ago, Saranac Lake’s boys cross country team edged Northeastern Clinton in the Section VII meet to earn a trip to the 2010 state championships.

The visiting Cougars earned some revenge with a 23-32 win over the Red Storm in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference meet Tuesday, Sept. 27 on the Saranac Lake High School course.

In his fourth year with the team, senior Neil Miller earned his first win as a NCCS runner to lead the Cougars boys to the sweep. Miller finished on top of the boys field in 19 minutes, 15 seconds in the meet that also included Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.

The Cougars also took second in the boys race as Sean Kuzmin crossed the line in 19:20. Saranac Lake runners came across the line in third and fourth place, with senior Chris Willette finishing in 19:35 and Evan Klein following one second back.

Saranac Lake did pick up a 15-50 victory over Lake Placid’s boys. Curtis Rissberger and Nick Stosiek were the top runners for the Blue Bombers, placing eighth and 10th respectively with 21:03 and 21:30 finish times.

Also for the Lake Placid boys, Alex Coffrin finished in 22:40 and Will Coffrin crossed the line in 26:01.
