Roxanne Homer left us on Monday, October 3, 2011 after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Roxy was a person of indomitable spirit and strength who lived life on her terms. She was quick with a smile and had a gift for connecting with people. We will miss her.
Roxanne was born in Syracuse in 1932 to W. Binion and Mary Potter Jones. She spent her early summers at Aller Camp on Buck Island in Lake Placid and returned there often. She met Richard Homer at Alfred University while majoring in ceramics and Dick introduced Roxy to Mount Desert Island, Maine. They spent mud season with dear friends at Guana Cay in the Bahamas.
Always adventurous, Roxy and Dick left Wellesley, Mass. in 1969 with their three daughters and two crew to try to sail around the world. “Faith Jones” was home for three years. While there were numerous passages through the Bahamas, Virgin Islands, Panama, and a successful attempt to reach the Galapagos Islands, “Faith Jones” settled for those adventures and sailed home to Mount Desert Island to become year-round residents.
She put her ceramics degree to good use when she went to work at the Kimball Shop in Northeast Harbor where her ready smile and knowledge of china and pottery was an invaluable asset.
She is survived by her husband, Richard W. Homer, who loved her for 60 years. Additional survivors include daughters: Deborah Homer and husband Bill DuBois of Jamestown R.I., Susannah Homer of Southwest Harbor, Maine and her daughter Katherine Roy of New Orleans, Marc and Sarah Fortin and children Zach and Mikayla of Portland Maine, borrowed son William Johnson of Mill Valley Calif, sister Georgia E. Jones of Lake Placid, brother and sister-in-law Stephen and Nancy Homer of Southwest Harbor ME, nieces and nephews Katherine Volmrich, Jeffrey and Fiona Volmrich, Davian Rawls, Cindy and Bruce Daman, Chris Rawls, Jennifer and Ken Burg, Scott and Audrey Homer, Peter and Linda Homer, Eliza Homer.
A celebration of Roxanne’s life was held on Oct. 11 at the family home.
