Joseph W. ‘Joe’ Brooks

LAKE PLACID - Joseph W. "Joe" Brooks 69, of 15 Maple St., Lake Placid, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a brief illness.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Bernadine (Sokolow). He was a proud and enthusiastic father to daughters, Michelle McVay (Aaron) of Ava, N.Y., and Rebecca Wolford (Michael) of Sierra Vista, Ariz. The lights of his life included his four grandchildren: Soren, Teyla, Liam and Everest.

Joe was born in 1942, the son of the late Agnes Whyte and James Monroe Brooks II.

He will be fondly remembered by his brother Jim Brooks (Marcia) of Lake Placid, and sisters Anne Breth of Cedarhurst and Dorothy White of Potomac, Md.

Joe will be dearly missed by many nieces and nephews, friends and relatives.

Joe has been really dedicated to his many friends and community. Joe served on the board of directors for the Adirondack Medical Center and the board of directors for the chamber of commerce. He loved providing and cooking food for the Lions toboggan races for 30 years.

Joe was born in Brooklyn. He attended St. John's Prep and St. John's University with a degree in accounting. He was a member of the National Society of Public Accountants since 1979.

Joe came to the Tri-Lakes area in 1971 to be the comptroller for the Saranac Lake General Hospital, where he held that position for seven years. He moved to Lake Placid in 1973 and established his accounting firm, Accounting Associates, in 1976. He was co-owner of Brooks Sunshine cottage B&B for the last 20 years.

His family is grateful to his friends for their dedicated support during his illness.

Calling hours were held Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the M.B. Clark Inc. Funeral Home in Lake Placid with a Lions Club Prayer Service at 6:45 p.m. A Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at St. Agnes Catholic Church with the Rev. McAvoy officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Joseph W.
