PLATTSBURGH - After competing at No. 1 and 2 singles for the Lake Placid boys tennis team this season, Nick Stosiek and Alex Jelinek showed Section VII that they can also play pretty well as a doubles combination.

On Saturday, May 26 at SUNY Plattsburgh, the two Blue Bombers seniors were crowned Section VII champions in doubles tennis.

Heading into the sectionals, Stosiek and Jelinek were seeded fifth and had a bye in the opening round. They then went on to win four straight matches - including a quarterfinal contest against two Lake Placid teammates - to stun the field and take the title.

On their way to the top, the pair toppled two higher seeds, including the top-ranked team in the tournament.

The pair started second-round action against fellow Blue Bombers Keegan Barney and Joel Silver, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Peru's Matthew Rine and Camden Brockbank. Facing their friends and teammates, Stosiek and Jelinek posted a 6-4, 6-2 win to move into the quarterfinals, where they defeated Beekmantown's Jarid Stiles and Dylan Riley 6-2, 6-1.

With two straight-set victories in hand, Stosiek and Jelinek went on to win their next two matches in three-set battles. They took down the top team in a semifinal match, defeating Peru's Pat Daly and Sean Harrigan 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, and then claimed the title with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Northeastern Clinton's McKenna Hunter and Adam Khater, who were seeded fourth.

Lake Placid also captured a consolation win on the girls side, as Blue Bombers seniors Natalia Smith and Serena Hallowell posted three wins and a loss in the tournament. The two seniors were seeded fourth heading into action and won twice before falling in the semifinals.

After a first-round bye, Smith and Hallowell claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Beekmantown's Anna Stitt and Kendra LaFountain to reach the quarterfinals. Then they topped Seton Catholic's Eva Zalis and Mallory Favreau 6-1, 6-0 to move into the semifinal round, where they fell 6-3, 6-3 to the top-seed and eventual champions Bailey Waterbury and Alexandra Provost of Beekmantown.

After getting knocked out of the championship round, the two Blue Bombers finished strong, claiming a three-set win over Northeastern Clinton's third-seed duo of Erica Sorrell and Lacie Hogle by 6-4, 1-6 and 6-4 scores.

Kayla Hudson and Grace McGrew also represented the Lake Placid girls in doubles. They were blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Sorrell and Hogle.

Lake Placid's girls had four players competing in singles with Joan O'Leary emerging with the lone victory. As the top Blue Bombers competitor, she defeated Jenna LaValley of NCCS 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round. O'Leary then fell to Plattsbrugh's Marle Curle 6-0, 6-4.

Also in the first round for the Blue Bombers: Victoria O'Leary suffered a 6-3, 6-1 setback to Peru's Karley Gaddeau-Stefaniak, Brenna Garret dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Michalea Courson and Liza Marinis fell 6-2, 6-1 to Plattsburgh's Evy Gobbens.
