CANTON - The Adirondack Chill girls 16-and-under softball team competed in the Great Northern Challenge tournament in Canton Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 17. The Chill came away with three wins and two losses, falling in the semifinals.
In round-robin play Saturday, the Chill opened with a 10-1 loss to the Adirondack Diamonds, who went on to win the tournament. The Chill managed just four hits, with Sydney Battistoni, Haley Brandes and Jen McGuoirk rapping out singles and Serina Hayes adding a double to drive in the team's only run. Nicole Viscardo took the loss while sharing pitching duties with Olivia Jacques. The pair gave up just five hits but four fielding errors and six walks hurt their efforts.
The Chill bounced back in the second game with a 22-6 victory over the North Country Cougars. Hayes was the winning pitcher after giving up just one hit and Jordy McDougall got the save. Offensively, Hayes led the way with a 3-for-5 performance and six RBI, including a three-run home run. Viscardo also had three hits and four RBI and Brandes had three hits and three RBI.

Emma Gray went the distance in the final game of the day as the Chill beat the Lady Maples 8-3. Gray gave up just two hits while striking out five and walking seven. Battistoni, Brandes, Viscardo, McGuoirk and Rachelle Goff paced the offense with two hits each.
Sunday's quarterfinal round saw the Chill facing the North Country Cougars in a rematch from Saturday. The Chill came away with a 15-7 victory. Jacques got the win after allowing five hits, striking out six and walking three. Hayes got the save in relief. Viscardo went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Battistoni had two hits and four RBI and Hayes chipped in two hits.
The Chill fell in the semifinals to the Northern Xplosion 7-5 despite taking an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Viscardo took the loss in relief of Hayes. Battistoni had two hits, while Brittany Woodruff, McDougall, Hayes and Viscardo added one hit apiece.
The Chill are next scheduled to play in the Saratoga Miss Invitational July 20 through 22.
