Blue Bombers girls hoops drops two

The Lake Placid girls basketball team dropped two Champlain Valley Athletic Conference games to open the league season.

The Blue Bombers lost 69-11 on Dec. 8 in the SUNY Plattsburgh Fieldhouse, then lost 30-17 at home against Seton Catholic on Dec. 11.

Hanna Potter led the way offensively for Lake Placid in both games, scoring six against Seton Catholic and four against AuSable Valley.

Against the Knights, the teams went into the locker room at halftime tied at 12-12. Seton Catholic stormed to a 9-0 third quarter to take control of the game

Paige Spittler scored a game-high 16 points and Samantha Bashaw connected for six to pace Seton Catholic.

Lake Placid is 0-3 overall on the season.



Minerva-Newcomb 39, Lake Placid 31

LAKE PLACID - The Minerva-Newcomb boys basketball team used a 15-7 fourth quarter to overtake the lead and secure a 39-31 victory over Lake Placid on Dec. 6.

After falling behind by seven points after the first quarter, the Blue Bombers pulled ahead in the second by outscoring the Mountaineers 14-2 for an 18-15 halftime advantage.

Tarik Cecunjanin led the way offensively for Lake Placid with nine points. Garrett Woodruff chipped in with seven points.

Minerva-Newcomb's Austin Williams led all scorers with 18 points.

The Blue Bombers (0-3) returned to action Dec. 12 at home against Schroon Lake.



Potsdam 5, Lake Placid 3

LAKE PLACID - The Potsdam girls hockey team scored late in the second period and added another in the third to secure a 5-3 victory over Lake Placid on Dec. 11.

The Sandstoners opened the scoring 53 seconds into the first period when Kalie Grant took a pass from Sierra Gagnon for a 1-0 lead. Kady Hart extended the lead to 2-0 a minute later.

Lake Placid battled back with two goals to end the first period. Samantha Barney scored the first goal on a feed from Kendra Manning at the 8:02 mark. Barney tied the game 11:29 into the period.

Potsdam regained the lead six minutes into the second period with another Grant goal. Manning answered for Lake Placid after taking a pass from Barney at the 13:00 mark.

Megan Stevenson gave Potsdam a 4-3 lead with 16 seconds remaining in the second period and teammate Ally Miller scored the insurance goal late in the third period to seal the win.

Lake Placid goaltender Tanner Stanton stopped 28 of the 33 shots she faced, while Sidney Molar had seven saves for the Sandstoners.
