As this issue of the Lake Placid News hits the press, the end of time looms with end of the world predictions sparked mainly by the ending of the Mayan calendar on Dec. 21, 2012. But, chances are time will go on. We still have time.
The period between Christmas and New Year's represents a time of reflection for many people. It's not only a time to reflect upon the past year, but to look forward to the next one. It's a great time for soul-searching and finding ways we can improve upon our lives.
With the passing of the Christmas holiday, the time of gift-giving has too ended for most of us.
But it's important to try to keep the spirit that is Christmas going year-round. One gift we all take for granted is the gift of time. No one knows exactly when that gift will be taken away and our time in this world will end.
Time was taken away from the young victims and their parents in the awful tragedy in Newton, Conn. Still, in the light of tragedy there are usually reminders for us all. Time is a gift.
It is a gift we can pass around to others. And it is a valuable gift indeed.
Take your time and give it freely. Spend time with loved ones. Spend time to help others. Spend it wisely on yourself too. Take time to rest and appreciate every moment, and be thankful that we have the time to do it.
Often we try hard to think of a special gift for someone. Sometimes the best gift we can give - especially to an elderly relative or loved one - is spending time with them. Not just a rushed visit. Sure, we all have important things to do, but someday when that loved one is gone, we will wish for that gift of time with them. Sit down for an hour or two and play cards with them - it can be THAT simple. That gift of time is precious.
Parents, stop what you're doing - even just for an hour -and sit down with your child. Give them the gift of your time.
Plenty of gifts will be exchanged in the next few days, but the memories gained following the gift of time spent with loved ones or others will most likely be the most priceless gifts of all.
As 2012 nears its conclusion and 2013 beckons, ponder ways on which you can give the gift of time - before it runs out on you.
