ELIZABETHTOWN - The Essex County Board of Supervisors greeted the county's new Republican elections commissioner on Feb. 7.
Allison McGahay of Lake Placid steps into the role following the departure of Derinda Sherman last month. Sherman, of Westport, wasn't reappointed because supervisors failed to meet a Jan. 14 deadline to act on a recommendation by the Essex County Republican Committee. The committee then accepted letters of interest for the position, and McGahay was the only person who responded.
McGahay recently stepped down from her position as an assistant district attorney with the Essex County District Attorney's Office.
"I really do hope to make you happy with the Board of Elections," she said. "It's a very important election year this year because it's local. Everything is local; everything affects us."
