To the editor:
The Olympic Center recently hosted the 2013 Eastern Synchronized Skating Championship. This event was participated in by 146 skating teams consisting of more than 2,300 skaters. The teams came from up and down the East Coast, from Florida to Maine.
As you can imagine this event required a great deal of planning and required a large amount of volunteers. I would like to thank those who helped us put on this event. The competitors were met with smiling faces and a willingness to help, you helped them get to their locker rooms, onto the ice and registered them and in general created a warm welcoming atmosphere. These efforts enhanced Lake Placid's reputation in the figure skating world.
I would also like to thank Mike Nicola of Nicola's and Grill 211 for hosting the judges dinner and preparing a meal that the judges raved about for days. To the highway crews of both the village and the town for keeping the roads around the Olympic Center clean so the 60-plus buses that were here could move around effortlessly, thank you.
It goes without saying that none of this would have been possible without the efforts of the Olympic Center staff. The building was clean, the ice was done to perfection and as is your trademark, you were always helpful to our guests. Having that many people in our building coming and going for three days is not easy, but you did not miss a beat. To the event staff that took and sold pictures, sold tickets, produced the programs, designed the logo and offered general support, thank you for your efforts.
Finally, I would like to thank Mary Elizabeth Wightman and Katrina Hofbauer for their efforts in planning this event and for your attention to detail. All of your efforts made this a memorable weekend for the athletes and their parents.
In closing, this mixture of dedicated volunteers and staff set the bar very high for those communities that compete against us for events like this. I am proud to be a part of the Olympic Regional Development Authority and proud to be a citizen of Lake Placid.
