North Elba half marathon adds 10k

LAKE PLACID - Organizers of the Lake Placid/North Elba Half Marathon will add a 10-kilometer race this year and look to get more youth involved.

Rick Preston spoke about some of the changes to the event at a village Board of Trustees meeting April 29. This year's half marathon, set for Sept. 7, is the 43rd installment of the race.

"Last year, Art Devlin and I co-organized the half marathon," Preston said. "We considered it a huge success. It was a huge learning experience. We had about 225 runners sign up, and we were able to donate - not as much as we had planned - some funding to the Lake Placid Youth (Athletic) Association."

The LPYAA received $1,500 from last year's race. Preston said the goal is to have profits from the race benefit the community's youth.

This year, the event will raise funds for the Lake Placid-Wilmington Connecting Youth and Communities Coalition, Preston said.

"They're going to assist us with the race, and hopefully we can get the youth of the community involved in the race and moving this race forward," he said.

This year's race course will be the same as last year: runners will start at the Olympic Skating Oval on Main Street and finish at the North Elba Show Grounds.

"We feel we've worked out any discrepancies and some difficulties we had last year," Preston said.

The 10k race will start at the same time as the half marathon and also finish at the Show Grounds.

"We're hoping to attract the spouses of some of the half marathoners," Preston said.

Adirondack Health, where Preston works, will provide liability insurance for the race.

The village board voted unanimously to endorse the event.
