New school officials get started in Lake Placid

July 12, 2013

LAKE PLACID - New principals are in place, and everything seems to be going well so far.

That's according to new Lake Placid Central School District Superintendent Roger Catania, who gave an update on the new leadership at the Tuesday July 2 board meeting.

The district's three new principals all began on Monday. Brian Latella, a teacher from central New York, took over as elementary school principal, and former Bloomingdale Elementary School Principal Theresa Lindsay took the middle school principal job while former Saranac Lake Middle School Dean of Students Dana Wood started as high school principal.

Catania said the three spent half the day Monday meeting with him, district Business Manager Leonard Sauers and other members of the district.

Then district Director of Transportation Jeff Jacques gave all four of them a tour of the school district, driving through all the neighborhoods the district's students come from.

"We probably went by a lot of your houses," Catania told the school board.

He noted that all three principals are in temporary office space while their offices are being painted or having their floors redone. But he said hopefully that will be finished up in the next few days so the principals can start to settle in and feel more at home.

Also at the meeting, new school board member Jennifer Tufano was sworn in. Tufano replaces Martha Stahl, who resigned from the board because she is leaving the area.

"I'm happy to be here," Tufano said after she was sworn in.

Board members also re-elected Mary Dietrich as president of the board and they elected John Hopkinson as vice president. The last vice president, Janet Smith, retired from the board when her seat came up for election this spring.
