A part of the bicentennial celebration of Charles Dickens, this new stage adaptation of "Great Expectations" began its British national tour at the Richmond Theatre before moving to London's West End. This production received four stars from both The Times and the Sunday Telegraph.
"Great Expectations" was originally published in serial form between Dec. 1, 1860, and Aug. 3, 1861. It was adapted for the stage by Jo Clifford of Scotland, who has been working in the theater for more than 30 years.
She is the author of approximately 80 plays, and her work has been translated into several languages and produced throughout the world.
"Great Expectations" was directed and co-designed by Graham McLaren, who established the Theatre Babel. As artistic director from the company's beginning, he started directing and designing for the company in 1999. In 2005, he joined Perth Theatre, Scotland as artistic and co-creative director, where he remained until January 2008, after which he joined the Toronto-based theatre company Necessary Angel as an associate artist. Graham is an associate director for The National Theatre of Scotland.
