KEENE - Missing hiker Scott Haworth's body was found Saturday by hikers off the trail to Round Pond in the Dix Mountain Wilderness Area, according to state police.

Haworth was found hanging about four-tenths of a mile from the trailhead and 300 feet off the trail. His death was ruled a suicide by Essex County Coroner Frank Whitelaw.

Haworth, of Chicopee, Mass., was last seen at the Valley Grocery in Keene Valley on Sept. 5. State police later found his car, a 2002 Ford Escort, parked at the Round Pond Trailhead to the Dix Mountain Wilderness on Sept. 10.

Haworth was last seen at work on Aug. 24; he was employed at a bulk mail center in Springfield, Mass., according to Chicopee police. He was reported missing a week after not showing up to work.

After finding the body Saturday, hikers called state police. In response, state troopers and forest rangers went to the location and confirmed that a deceased male was there.

Whitelaw was then notified and authorized removal of the body to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

An autopsy was conducted on Monday by Dr. C. Francis Varga, who verified the body as Haworth and determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation due to hanging.

A prior search of the area and various trails in the region by forest rangers and state police, who used a K-9 unit and state police helicopter, had not located Haworth.
