Railroad is an asset

October 18, 2013
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

The Adirondack Recreational Trail Advocates appear to be part of a common alliance between environmental causes and local recreational trail concerns. They are well funded and following to the "T" a script to destroy the railroad operation and any development of commercial business in the process.

A rails-to-trails conversion of an abandoned railroad makes sense and good use of land assets WHEN THE RAILROAD IS NO LONGER USING IT. This group appears to be militant in pursuing a course to dismantle an active rail line. This makes no sense whatsoever! And for what purpose? Certainly, there are plenty of successful examples of rail-and-trail corridors that share the right of way. Why not preserve the railroad and the benefit it brings with potential business development and build the trail alongside it? Seems like a "no-brainer" to me.

The militant environmental left has taken root in trail projects as a way to reduce commercial and industrial development. Do not allow this to happen here. Rail assets are critical to real economic growth in any region.
