Local businessmen join no-shave November movement

LAKE PLACID - Like facial hair, the no-shave Movember movement is growing.

Movember (us.movember.com) is an annual effort - or lack thereof - involving the growing of moustaches and beards during the month of November to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other male cancer and associated charities.

The local Movember push started in late October when Tim Robinson of Terry Robards Wines & Spirits challenged radio announcer Paul Varga of WSLP-FM to a beard-growing contest for men's health awareness at Adirondack Medical Center.

The following week, another group of local businessmen, the Gold Medal Referrals Group of Business Network International, announced that their razors are on hold for the month.

Gold Medal Referrals member Greg Moore, who owns the Bear Essentials Apparel, created a "Movember in the Adirondacks" T-shirt which is available in brown and pink at Bear Essentials' stores in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. For every shirt sold, $5 will be donated to the cause.

"It's a fun way to promote awareness about a host of men's health issues," said Gold Medal Referrals chapter president Jim Williams of WSLP, "and there's the added benefit of not having to shave for an entire month!"

The local Gold Medal Referrals chapter meets weekly for the purpose of growing each other's business. Since its creation in 2006, the local business networking group has generated over $3 million in verified sales for its members.
