LAKE PLACID - Lake Placid High School students will get political this weekend when they perform the play "Smash" by Jeffrey Hatcher.

The script is based on the George Bernard Shaw novel "The Unsocial Socialist." It first premiered in Seattle in 1996.

The story, set at the turn of the 20th century, centers on a millionaire named Sidney Trefuis who wants to become a socialist, director Brenden Gotham told the News. Trefuis realizes its a conflict, so he leaves his wife a few minutes after his wedding to start a socialist revolution, and he goes to a girls' college to indoctrinate the young women there.

"His plan works a little too well, because a young students starts to believe what he says, and thus ensues the conflict," Gotham said.

Gotham said he saw the play about 10 years ago and loved it.

"It's a farcical comedy - over the top," Gotham said.

The play was originally British, but Gotham said he didn't want this actors to get stuck on accents, so they will speak in what he calls "crisp English" rather than dialect.

The show runs at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 at the high school auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults.
