LAKE PLACID - A local man was arrested Sunday for allegedly leaving the scene of a car crash.
Leland F. Stanton III, 22, of Lake Placid, drove a 1998 Dodge van off the south shoulder of Wesvalley Road and struck a tree at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday; then he left the scene of the crash on foot, according to a state police press release.
A Lake Placid village police officer had seen Stanton driving about an hour before the crash and recognized the van when she responded after someone called to report it off the road. Village police reported the incident to state police, who arrived and found Stanton a short time later at a relative's apartment at Wesvalley Housing, state police spokeswoman Jen Fleishman said.
"They followed the tracks in the snow that led right to the door of the housing there," Fleishman said.
Police said that when Stanton was arrested, he was found to be in possession of about a half-gram of marijuana. Testing found his blood alcohol content to be 0.13 percent.
Stanton was charged with driving while intoxicated, unlawful possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a property-damage motor vehicle accident, moving from the lane unsafely and having an uninspected motor vehicle.
Stanton was ticketed to appear in North Elba town court at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16.
