Our Olympians

January 24, 2014
Editorial , Lake Placid News

Except for Lake Placid alpine skier Andrew Weibrecht, whose status won't be announced until Sunday, our list of Adirondack Olympians is now complete.

We'll have at least seven and hopefully eight local athletes at these Olympics, in at least five sports. Our reporters Chris Knight and Lou Reuter will cover them as they compete in Russia.

Lou will also cover 15 Olympians from elsewhere in New York as they compete in four sports - although 10 of them are hockey players, including three who play for New York NHL teams but aren't from New York state originally.

Also on our radar are five Olympians who went to school in Lake Placid, mostly at National Sports Academy.

Here's the list. We suggest you post it on your social media of choice, or print it out and put it on your refrigerator, bulletin board or wherever you post things. Show your pride in our local and New York Olympians!

Lake Placid is also home of the U.S. bobsled, skeleton and luge teams, so all those athletes live in Lake Placid for much of the year while training, as do some athletes in other sports. Plus, many coaches live here full-time. Most of USA Luge's leadership lives in Lake Placid, and U.S. skeleton head coach Tuffy Latour lives in Saranac Lake.

We'll also do our best to give you coverage of local people in Sochi for the games, such as athletes' families and people working or volunteering at the event. Several times at the 2010 games our reporters were able to watch a race with local Olympians' families in the audience and tell you the story from their exciting perspective. We'll try to do some of that again.
