To the editor:
My observations regarding the blackfly control program in North Elba:
Having the brook by our camp on Lake Placid seeded for 15 or more years was very effective in reducing the blackfly irritation; however, I noticed other changes that weren't so positive: fewer and, in some cases, no toads, frogs, newts, Caddis fly larvae, "skipper bugs," bass nests near docks, no bass or trout hatchlings, fewer birds, no swallows, fewer butterflies and no bats (also affected by other problems).
As a result of this observation, five years ago I halted the Vecto Bac seeding on our property. Last summer, nearly all the "missing" creatures were sighted again. Therefore, we wear protective clothing sprayed with repellent and enjoy seeing more of nature again.
