Griffin captures NENY crown, earns spot at nationals

Arthur Griffin of Lake Placid poses after winning the Northeastern New York PGA Junior Championships on Saturday at the Town of Colonie Golf Course. Griffin, who will take his talents to Lafayette College in Pennsylvania in the fall, shot a one-under 71 on both days of the tournament to earn a spot in the Junior PGA Championships, which will be played at Miramont Country Club in College Station, Texas July 29 through Aug. 1. Griffin, 18, outscored runner-up Christopher Thompson of Saratoga Springs by six strokes. Other local golfers in the NENY tournament were Ethan Sawyer of Rainbow Lake who placed 15th with a two-day score of 161 and his sister Carley Sawyer who placed fifth overall with a 90 on each day in the girls’ tournament. Jenny Buchanan of Loudonville won the girls’ tournament with a 74 on the first day and a 75 on the second day.
