Cuomo’s Adirondack Challenge returns July 20

July 11, 2014

The second annual Adirondack Challenge rafting races will take place Sunday, July 20 in Indian Lake.

The Adirondack Challenge is a series the governor's office holds, starting last summer, to promote the Adirondacks to people throughout the state.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's press office did not return calls regarding the event, but Lauren Wire of Finn Partners News Agency in New York City is handling media invites and said local and state officials are expected to attend. She said details will become available closer to the date of the race.

Last year's event include a whitewater rafting race down a 3-mile stretch of the Indian River.

It's unclear if Cuomo will attend this year's event, although he has attended the past two Adirondack Challenges: the one last summer on the Indian River and the winter challenge in Lake Placid held in March. Both events attracted local and state officials.

The whitewater race takes place the same weekend as Indian Lake's annual Community Summer Bash in Byron Park, which takes place on Saturday.

The Adirondack Challenge was created to highlight the Adirondack Park's tourism industry. Last year's summer event drew national media attention and lasted two days. New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg took part the second day.

The governor also invited state lawmakers and staff to an Adirondack Winter Challenge in and around Lake Placid in March.
