More appropriate photo could have been used for STEM story

February 23, 2017
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

The photo for the article on encouraging women in STEM fields contains a photo of a male owner of a bar speaking with Lt. Gov. Hochul. A more appropriate photo is one of young girls with a microscope. And the author of the print version is a man, while the author of the e'version is a woman. These subtle messages do not bode well for attracting girls and women into math and the sciences.

(Editor's note: The byline of the story titled "Lt. Gov. Hochul wants more women in STEM fields" on Page A2 in the print version of the Feb. 17 Lake Placid News was mistakenly attributed to Staff Writer Antonio Olivero. As soon as the mistake was discovered on Feb. 16, after the newspaper was printed, the byline was correctly attributed to Staff Writer Kelly Carroll for the website version. The News regrets the error.)
