March 17, 2017
Lake Placid News
In honor of Women’s History Month, here is a photograph of American singer Kate Smith presenting a trophy to Katherine Dewey, the pilot of the Sno-Birds Bobsled Team. Her team won the Commissioner Osborne Cup at the Mount Van Hoevenberg bobsled run. From left are Ed Trudeau, Tord Ringdahl, Frank Rice, Katerine Dewey and Kate Smith. The date of the photograph was Feb. 3, 1936. Dewey was a pioneer of women’s bobsledding. She won a national bobsled championship in 1940, and she was considered one of the top bobsledding pilots during an era that was dominated by men.
