GARDEN CLUB NEWS: Club getting ready for growing season

April 13, 2017
By DOT BEATTY - Lake Placid Garden Club , Lake Placid News

Although it may not look like it, spring activity is happening under all the snow and dirt in our gardens.

The Garden Club of Lake Placid welcomes you to the 2017 season of gardening.

"Sowing Seeds of Success" has been designated as the theme of this gardening season by our new President Joan Donaldson. She will be working closely with a slate of Club officers on the executive committee. This committee consists of Joan Donaldson (President), Dot Beatty (Vice President), Sheila Venezia (Treasurer), Margaret Daby (Secretary), Renate Schachenmayr (Membership), Faith Brown (Program Chairperson), Conni Cross and Claire Thayer chairpersons at large.

All of these officers and all the program and project chairpersons can be contacted for more information. Our website has all this information at www.gardencluboflakeplacid.org.

Here is a peek into where and how Joan and her executive committee will sow the "Seeds of Success."

"The Garden Club of Lake Placid has a long tradition of providing volunteer service in the Village of Lake Placid," Donaldson said. "Our 2017 Calendar of Events reflect the important continuation of this tradition. In addition to various volunteer services the calendar holds many educational and fun events pertaining to numerous gardening and environmental topics."

A highlight this August will be a joint meeting and luncheon with the Adirondack Garden Club. If you are interested, come out and join us to learn, garden, and play in the dirt.

Our opening meeting will be Wednesday, April 26. This gathering will held at the lovely Mirror Lake Inn from 2 to 4 p.m. The room location is the Wikoff Room which is directly behind the formal dinning room. Bring a guest and enjoy the review of our 2017 gardening season. Plan on wearing one of your favorite gardening hats. This might help jump start spring!

We welcome all returning members, new members and those thinking about becoming a member of the Garden Club of Lake Placid. A membership form is available on our website.

Check us out and if you wish to become a member simply print the membership form and mail it in with the dues to the Garden Club of Lake Placid, PO box 984, Lake Placid New York, 12946.

Our website has all this information available for you in addition to Club history, information, programs, 2017 calendar and membership list which is passcoded and provided to members only.

One gardening tip I recently heard was to spend some time now viewing the shrubs you want to prune. Their roots are busy underground but no leaves are out that might hide the shape of the shrub or the shape you want it to be. So take a look and design your pruning activity for the first warm 60-degree spell or wait until after the first blooms are spent.
