Lake Placid News

Jonathan Eells Welles, 62, died suddenly on April 17, 2017, at his home in Jamestown, Rhode Island.

He was the son of Edward O'Malley Welles and Frances Eells Welles, born in Saranac Lake. He retired last year from Citigroup as a supervisory equity analyst, and he was an alumnus of The Hotchkiss School and Claremont McKenna College.

He was a writer, a golfer, a man of singular vision and broad mind, an optimist and a true gentleman.

He had lived in Paris; Rabat, Morocco; Lagos, Nigeria; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and Washington, D.C.; New York City; Naples, Florida; and San Francisco.

With gregarious wit, he entertained often with exotic stories.

A devoted husband and father, he was beloved by his wife Paulette and his son Sam. In addition, he is survived by a sister Parmelee Welles Tolkan of Lake Placid and a brother Edward Welles of Kennebunkport, Maine. He is mourned and survived by the Welles, Eells, Chisholm and Thibault clans.

Taken from us far too soon, he leaves an emptiness in our lives, but continues to fill our hearts.
