Reader not in favor of ‘obnoxious, ear-shattering helicopters’

June 22, 2017
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

I read a report (on the Lake Placid News website and in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise) concerning the Olympic village with a sense of dread. It's about two guys who want to launch sightseeing helicopter tours out of the Lake Placid airport. Among the horrors they would inflict on us is what they call the "Ridge Rider Tour" where their obnoxious, ear-shattering helicopters would fly low over the treetops of the McKenzie Mountain Wilderness.

I can't imagine anything more destructive to the character of the Adirondack Park than these noisy, pulsating machines buzzing the summits on our state lands, or flying anyplace else in the Adirondacks for that matter. Let's hope that local officials won't even think about allowing helicopter flights over our peaceful lakes, mountains, forests and villages. Let's hope the state of New York, in whose custody the state lands are supposedly safeguarded, will kill this awful idea in its cradle ... and that the Park's environmental groups will rise up as one and send these guys and their helicopters packing long before they have a chance to undermine the most cherished quality of the Adirondacks-its wildness and serenity.
