Mini-Tri season off and running

June 27, 2017

LAKE PLACID - The High Peaks Cyclery's first mini triathlon kicked off its weekly summer series Monday in Lake Placid.

The race, which includes a 400-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3-mile run, takes place every Monday and starts at 6:30 p.m. adjacent to the Mirror Lake beach.

Twenty-seven individual competitors and three teams participated in the season-opener and featured a mix of local athletes and a smattering of visitors to the village, including a handful who were in Saturday's 35th annual Tupper Lake Tinman.

The pair teamed up for the race, with Zaunbrecher taking on the 400-yard swim leg and Battaglia rounding out the race with the bike and run portions.

Karen Delaney, who owns High Peaks Cyclery along with her husband Brian, said a smaller turnout is pretty normal for the first race and said that number balloons considerably deeper into the summer tourist season.

Monday's competition for the top spot couldn't have been much closer, as eight seconds separated the top two finishers. In the end, New York City's Timothy Clarke beat out Lake Placid's Colin Delaney in a sprint to the finish line. Clark won in 56 minutes, 59 seconds, a result that included the fastest run time of the evening of 17:24.

Colin Delaney crossed the line in 57:07. His bike time of 31:55 was more than a minute faster than any other competitor in the field.

Two more racers broke the one-hour mark while placing third and fourth overall. Doug McClean, of Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, placed third in 57:49, and Justin Arnosky of Austin, Texas was fourth in 58:04. Both triathletes were coming off two days of rest after strong finishes in the Tinman. McLean placed sixth in that race and Arnosky finished 16th.

Lenny Ramsey of Waukesha, Wisconsin, was the fastest woman in Monday's field and finished in 1:01:16. Ramsey was Saturday's women's Tinman champion in the Olympic distance race and placed third overall in that competition.

Monday's mini-tri was held under difficult conditions due to construction taking place along Mirror Lake Drive, which has been narrowed down to about a lane and a half of pavement while the work is being done.

The mini-tris will run through Aug. 14. Registration takes place from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. prior to each race.
