LAKE PLACID - What happens when iconic Lake Placid breweries team-up for the first time? A limited release sour India Pale Ale in honor of National IPA Day.

Brewers at the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, Big Slide Brewery, and Great Adirondack Brewing Company partnered to brew "Symbiosis - A Brett IPA." At 6.3 percent alcohol by volume, it's a limited release sour India Pale Ale described as "slightly tart, straw-colored with a blend of two Brettanomyces strains, and a bountiful addition of modern American hops. Notes of lemon and grapefruit cohabiting with subtle hints of apricot and melon."

The beer was tapped at Big Slide Brewery & Public House and Great Adirondack Brewing on Thursday, Aug. 3 in celebration of National IPA day.

Both breweries will feature the beer at Lake Placid Brewfest on Saturday, Sept. 23.

"Since the mid-'90s, our breweries have been producing world-class beers about a mile from each other here in Lake Placid," said Chris Ericson, the owner of Lake Placid Pub & Brewery and Big Slide. "And we thought it was time to collaborate on a beer to celebrate our brewing heritage. Our companies have always had a strong respect for each other and we share an unyielding passion for consistent, high quality, great tasting craft beer. It was a pleasure working with the staff at Great Adirondack and we are thrilled with the beer."

"We were excited to put all of the brewers together in a room to design, and then brew this unique I.P.A", said Great Adirondack Brewery owner Rob Kane. "When we both opened, there were less than 40 breweries in New York, and now there are over 360. We believe that our brewing teams are making some of the best beers in New York."

Paul Leone, executive director of the New York State Craft Brewers Association was impressed with the collaboration.

"With the incredible growth of breweries in New York state, it's great to see the collaborative nature of our industry come through from two veteran breweries in Lake Placid," Leone said. "We have no doubt this beer will be special."

The Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, which opened in 1996, is located at 813 Mirror Lake Drive, directly across the street from Mirror Lake, and houses a seven-barrel microbrewery.

Big Slide Brewery & Public House opened in 2016 and is located at 5686 Cascade Road (Route 73), serving a farm-to-table menu and 10 beers brewed on their 3.5-barrel microbrewery.

Brewing on a seven-barrel system, Great Adirondack Brewing Company was opened in 1997 in Lake Placid by the Kane family and is located at the Great Adirondack Steak & Seafood Company, 2442 Main St.
