Lake Placid has the Olympic fire

Lake Placid News

To the editor:

Friday night, Feb. 9, in harmony and celebration with the Opening Ceremony of the Korean Olympic Games, flames once again rose from Lake Placid's 1980 Olympic Cauldron.

This relighting was organized as a simple community event. The results were spectacular!

Those who were involved were remarkable. Please join me in acknowledging their efforts.

The official Torch Team is small. Only two people ensure the flame appears. Matt Colby controls the ignition process, Joe Leonard is the technician who gets the gas to the top of the tower, and supporting this small team was the generosity of Bill Hurley, who donated all the fuel.

Butch Martin's involvement is critical. He has, for almost four decades, attended to all the onsite details so others can simply enjoy the events.

Denny Allen supplied the handheld torch with Jay Harvey assisting the runners and Darci LaFave organized the runners.

Lake Placid Fire Department and Electric Department members gave of their time and expertise. When it was discovered that new wiring was needed, Phil and Maryanne from Cascade Electric gladly donated the needed materials.

One of the last "Good Guys," Jim Williams, promoted this event and supplied Olympic music. Kristen Moore acted as onsite music mixer.

Stuart Hemsley, master of ceremonies, brought the event to life with an absolutely brilliant script celebrating our past while highlighting all local Olympic athletes and encouraging us all to continue participation in the true spirit of the Olympic Games.

Once again this community gathered under the glow of the 1980 torch Cauldron. May that light always shine.

The evening ended with Kate Smith signing "God Bless America." May God bless all our Olympic participants, and may God continue to bless Lake Placid, New York, USA.

If you see any of the above-mentioned people, please say thank you! And my special thanks to all of you who showed up to celebrate!
