SARANAC LAKE - Harrietstown town Councilwoman Jordanna Mallach will be honored by Assemblyman Billy Jones, D-Chateaugay, at a local Women of Distinction Awards ceremony Saturday, April 14.

Mallach, who is also the commander of American Legion Post 326 in Lake Placid, and five other women will be honored.

Jones began the Woman of Distinction award in his Assembly district two years ago to honor women who have made an impact in fields such as education, health care, volunteerism, military service and community service.

The New York Senate has been giving out Women of Distinction awards for 20 years. In 2015, for example, former North Elba town Supervisor and Lake Placid Mayor Shirley Seney was named a New York State Senate Woman of Distinction, nominated by Sen. Betty Little.

"Women across our region work tirelessly to make it a better place for all. They're strong leaders and inspirational change-makers, and during Women's History Month, they deserve to be recognized," Jones said. "The 2018 Women of Distinction Awards gives us the chance to come together and celebrate these incredible women in our community."

In all, there were 140 nominations sent to Jones's office. The six 2018 Women of Distinction recipients, by category, are:

-Military Service: Jordanna Mallach

-Education: Eileen Kilcullen

-Health Care: Ann Charette

-Community Service: Jane Sample

-Business: Susan Matton

-Volunteerism: Maxine Perry

Jones wrote: "Jordanna has served our country both foreign and domestically, is currently the Special Programs Coordinator, for the New York State Division of Veterans Affairs, and she is involved in her community as an active Rotarian, member of the local Homeward Bound Adirondacks, and several other organizations."

Mallach moved to Lake Placid from the Albany area in 2006, then to Saranac Lake in 2013.

The ceremony will take place Saturday, April 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Stafford Science & Technology Building Theatre at Clinton Community College.
