April 13, 2018
By JINI HOOD - Lake Placid Garden Club , Lake Placid News

Spring is coming. The mailbox is full of garden catalogs encouraging the purchase of everything from achillea to zinnias. There are so many choices of beautiful flowers that create lovely thoughts during the cold and snowy time as well as the messy and muddy time.

The Garden Club of Lake Placid is ready for another exciting year with interesting and fun programs. The theme for 2018 is "85 Beautiful Years" - referring to the time that the club has been in existence. All those years, the Garden Club has focused on beautification of the village and surrounding area.

Current programs in and around the village include the Triangle Garden at the state Route 73 entrance to the village, the Memorial Garden in the courtyard of Elderwood at Uihlein, the Kate Smith Memorial at the main parking lot near the post office, village clean-up day, highway clean-up three times a year, Arbor Day, the creation of evergreen swags to decorate the village for the holidays, Green Thumb awards for outstanding gardens, as well as awards for holiday decorations.

In addition, the Garden Club members hold workshops with the residents of Elderwood helping them make centerpieces for the dining room tables. Camperships for the DEC Environmental Camp at Lake Colby are part of the Club's community outreach. This is coordinated with the Lake Placid Middle School. Many, many hands are needed to maintain these projects and socialization is a fun part of each activity.

To start the celebration of "85 Beautiful Years" an afternoon tea will be held on Wednesday, May 9 at Mirror Lake Inn from 2 to 4 p.m. It is being titled "Let's Par'Tea" and will be an enjoyable afternoon of songs by Helen DeMong and Friends. Introduction of the Garden Club officers will be held, and a calendar of activities for 2018 will be available. All members and guests are welcome. Information on this and the other meetings through November will be mailed to current members during early March.

The Garden Club Board consists of President Joan Donaldson, Vice-President Dot Beatty, Secretary Mary Merrill, Treasurer Sheila Venezia, and Membership Renate Schachenmayr. Projects and activities have chairpersons and are faithfully recorded by historian and photographer Sally Stoerr.

All are welcome to join the club and participate in any activity that interests you. Look on the website at for more information, or contact the Garden Club of Lake Placid at P.O. Box 984, Lake Placid, NY 12946.
