Wintry Whiteface postpones Pond Skimming another week

April 13, 2018

The good news is that there's plenty of snow remaining on the slopes of Whiteface Mountain Ski Center in Wilmington. The bad news, however, is the weekend forecast calls for wet, chilly weather, which once again has forced the postponement of the International Pond Skimming competition.

The event had been originally slated for April 7 and then pushed back a week to this Saturday. Now that plan has also been scrapped, and Pond Skimming is now scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 21, starting at noon.

At Pond Skimming, skiers and snowboarders ski down a hill and attempt to skim over the top of a pond, in front of a cheering crowd. Many participants dress up in outlandish garb. There are prizes for best costumes, biggest splash and longest distance. The event usually takes place on Whiteface's last weekend of the winter season.

Whiteface will be open this weekend, and also during the Pond Skimming event. According to the ski center, the average base snow depth on its slopes Friday was 33 inches. Overall, this season, the mountain reported that it has received 212 inches of snowfall. On Friday, 55 trails and four lifts were reported open.
