One more weekend for Whiteface

LAKE PLACID - The Whiteface Mountain Ski Center will reopen for two more days of skiing Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Trails accessed by the Facelift quad, Little Whiteface gondola and Summit quad will be open, conditions permitting.

Whiteface is no longer making snow for the season, but what's left still makes for good skiing conditions, according to Jon Lundin, the communications manager for the state Olympic Regional Development Authority that runs the mountain.

There is still plenty of snow on Whiteface Mountain even as spring weather begins Saturday, April 21 in the Wilmington Notch, beside the AuSable River's West Branch and state Route 86.

This has been one of the longer seasons in recent years for both Whiteface and the Mount Van Hoevenberg Cross Country and Biathlon Center. Whiteface will enter day 153 on Saturday, and Van Hoevenberg closed this past Sunday after 157 days of operations, a new record for the venue confirmed by general manager Kris Cheney-Seymour. That's a 22-day increase from last year.

Before it even officially opened for this season, Van Hoevenberg was able to construct trails with help from its new snowmaking machine when temperatures were still 80 degrees above zero in late October 2017.

Lundin said Van Hoevenberg still has good snow, but the site is gearing up for its spring and summer offerings such as hiking and biking.

Normally, Whiteface's season ends with the Pond Skimming event, which was held this past Saturday, but this year's winter offered plenty of snowfall and consistently low temperatures. Only now, well into April, is the North Country starting to experience clear skies and warmer weather.
