Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID - One of Lake Placid's premiere tourism weeks will expand this summer as the 29th edition of the Summit Lacrosse Classic from July 30 to Aug. 5 will introduce a new midweek tournament at the North Elba Athletic Fields.

"We have added a new twist to the Lake Placid Summit Classic to accommodate the increasing interest among scholastic girls," said Ashley Gersuk Murphy, CEO of Summit Lacrosse Ventures. "We're calling it Summit 7s. This will be a two-day addition to the week on Wednesday and Thursday. Summit 7s will begin midday upon conclusion of scholastic Wednesday, and end by Thursday afternoon. The 7s will feature approximately 20 teams in a fun, fast, and competitive small-field format."

The addition of Summit 7s will now see the total number of teams increase to 357 over four separate events this summer. In all, Summit Lacrosse Ventures anticipates bringing 21,873 players, family members, organizers, officials, sponsors and vendors in tournaments and events that will begin in late June and conclude in early August.

"Our participants can't wait to come to Lake Placid every summer," Gersuk Murphy said. "The Olympic legacy, the scenery, hospitality, weather and the North Elba venue are all great attractions. At the same time, the events bring business to the community on four separate occasions. We couldn't be happier with the way it's all evolved in Lake Placid."

As usual, the Classic opens with the scholastic division, moves on to the new Summit 7s, and then brings on the adults and masters athletes, both men and women.

Summit Lacrosse Ventures will make its season return to Lake Placid with the High Peaks Summit Classic on June 23-24. This is the second year for the High Peaks tournament, born from the demand by the over 18 and over 30 age group teams that could not gain access to the August event. There will be 18 teams, including a First Responders division.

As the High Peaks Summit Classic concludes, the Lake Placid Summit Youth Classic, now in its third year, comes to town June 25-27 featuring 52 teams of first and second grade competitors. Over the course of the entire SLV season in Lake Placid, the spectrum of ages will range from seven and eight years old, to 65 and older.

The annual Northstar Invitational, a lacrosse combine for scholastic women, is set for July 23-26 with 10 teams participating at Northwood School in Lake Placid. The coaching staff is impressive, coming from many of the top colleges in the nation. The invitational stresses on and off field skill development, leadership, exposure, lifelong success and camaraderie.

SLV also stated that plans are underway to live stream the Major League Lacrosse Legends alumni game on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m., as well as the new Future Stars of Women's Lacrosse. The latter contest will be comprised of players who have verbally committed to many major colleges and universities around the country.

In addition, tournament organizers will host the United Women's Lacrosse League's semifinals on July 30 beginning at 4 p.m., also at the North Elba athletic fields.

Interested spectators are invited to attend any of these events, which are offered free of charge.
