Internet, phones come back on in Keene

May 8, 2018

Internet service came back on in the town of Keene around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, almost four days after a Friday night wind storm brought trees down on wires throughout the region.

Town Supervisor Joe Pete Wilson Jr. confirmed the news. He said land-line phones came back on Tuesday morning. Some phone customers in Keene and Keene Valley had service while others didn't. The town hall was one that didn't.

"I think we're back to being a part of the world," Wilson said.

The internet delay wasn't due to the local internet provider, KVVI. Wilson said KVVI was ready by Saturday, but the feed was cut off on a trunk line that comes into Keene from Elizabethtown. The New York State Electric and Gas Corporation had to clear trees off the trunk line, which is run by the Development Authority of the North Country, after it finished restoring electricity to customers who lost power Friday night.

Many thousands of homes and businesses lost power. National Grid got its customers back up and running over the weekend, and NYSEG finished Monday night.
