ORDA could do more for mountain biking

To the editor:

As small business owners and mountain bikers, my wife and I have avidly followed the development of multi-purpose trails and new mountain biking venues in our area. Local businesses in the Tri-Lakes region have really benefited from the growth of mountain biking.

However, I do have some concern that the Olympic Regional Development Authority has not sufficiently embraced mountain biking as a three-season activity to support their winter activities. For a case in point, look at this holiday weekend. The Memorial Day holiday is normally considered the start of the summer vacation season. ORDA has opened the Whiteface Memorial Highway and the Whiteface Mountain gondola but has not seen fit to have their vendor contract in place for lift-serviced mountain biking at Whiteface Mountain.

This is especially bad for local businesses as this coming weekend is the Leadville Race at Whiteface, the Wilmington 100K Road Race, and the Uphill Bike Race at Whiteface. Our area will be loaded with all types of cyclists looking to enjoy all of our local roads, trails, and downhill biking. We have already lost some business this past weekend, because a customer came to our B&B from Michigan to ride at Whiteface. Because he couldn't ride downhill here, he left to go to New Hampshire to ride.

In the future, it would certainly be a benefit our local economy and to ORDA if all activities were available when the summer season starts.
