BLUE BOMBER VOICES: School board has 6 strategic priorities

September 28, 2018
By RICK PRESTON , Lake Placid News

As your Lake Placid Central School Board of Education president, I welcome you to the 2018-19 school year. With a new school year underway, I would like to briefly review the responsibilities of the school board.

Local school boards are elected - or occasionally appointed - to be leaders and champions for public education. The school board is responsible for employing the district superintendent, developing and adopting policies, and overseeing curriculum, the annual budget and all district facilities. Another important element of the school board is the adoption of a long-term plan, also known as a Strategic Plan.

The Lake Placid Central School District's Strategic Plan guides our district's direction and assists in the proper distribution of resources (i.e. money, staff). Under the Strategic Plan are yearly objectives. These provide a yardstick by which we measure progress. The end result is to develop all students of the Lake Placid Central School District into citizens who are ready to positively contribute to society, and to prepare them to face whatever challenges the future holds.

To accomplish this, our plan and goals focus on supporting students, teachers and staff of the district. Briefly, we have adopted six goals, and all have several benchmarks to assure its success. The goals are:

- Students First and Foremost: Emphasize the importance of a diverse student culture that values all students regardless of backgrounds, strengths, interests and future plans. Focus on closing the opportunity gap for socio-economically disadvantaged students.

- Education: Ensure all educational programs and extracurricular activities provide all students the knowledge and understanding they will need to thrive in a diverse society. The school succeeds only when the students succeed.

- Community Outreach and Involvement: Make certain that the school district communicates and collaborates with community members and organizations.

- Leadership: Ensure that district and school leaders are role models for others.

- Technology: Assure that all students have equal access to technology regardless of economic status, and inspire students through innovative programs that enhance student learning.

- Finance: Conduct the financial operations of the district in an open, stable, responsible and fiscally sound manner to adequately provide for student learning.
