Embark to get a facelift

November 20, 2018
By JUSTIN A. LEVINE - Outdoors Writer ( , Lake Placid News

Embark, which is has been published by the Adirondack Daily Enterprise six times a year as a free outdoors adventure magazine, will undergo some major changes early next year.

In an effort to increase readership and the overall attractiveness of the magazine, we will be going to a glossy, full-color format starting with the April 2019 issue. And while the hike, paddle and ski trips you love will still loom large, there are some other changes we'd like you to know about.

Putting out a magazine six times per year is fun, but the December-January and April-May issues have always been tough. We never know if there's going to be snow, mud or perfect weather. It's hard to guess whether you will want biking trips or snowshoe ideas.

In response, we have decided to put out just four issues each year that will better correspond with the seasons. The new schedule will be Jan.-Feb.-March, April-May-June, July-Aug.-Sept., and Oct.-Nov.-Dec. This will allow us to better cater trips to the time of year and hopefully get you more ideas for how to spend your time outside.

So yes, there will be two fewer issues per year, but each issue will be larger. This means that you will get the same (or more!) amount of outdoor adventure ideas.

It also means that all of the photos of our trips will be in full color, which will hopefully help inspire you to get out in the Adirondacks.

All about you

One of the most exciting things about the new format of Embark is that we really want you to contribute.

Since each issue will be full color, we want your photos to help show others what they are missing by not getting outdoors. Have a cute shot of your kids splashing in a lake? Hiked a High Peak? Saw a moose on the road while driving to a mountain bike ride? Bag a nice buck in hunting season? Send 'em in!

We want to showcase everything the Adirondacks has to offer in terms of outdoor recreation, and quite frankly, I just can't be everywhere. So if you have something you'd like to show off to our growing readership, email a high-resolution photo, along with your name, hometown and a brief description of what's in the photo to

If you love being outside in the Adirondacks, help us foster that love with our readers by sharing views of your adventures.

Another way you can share with your fellow readers is to send in your favorite recipes. Whether it's a recipe for squash you grew in the garden, chili made with venison, or hearty stew that gets tossed in the slow cooker before heading out to ski, we want to know what you eat and why you love it.

Send in your recipe and a few sentences on why and when you eat it to be featured in Embark. Bonus points if you include a high-resolution photo of the food. Recipes can also be sent to

Also, think outside the box for recipes. Mulled cider, adult beverages, desserts and dishes made with fish, deer, bear or wild-harvested foods are all more than welcome, as are trail recipes such as granola, energy bars and camp food.

We really enjoy putting out Embark, and with a growing number of subscribers, it's clear that many of you enjoy it, too. We look forward to the changes, especially the full-color format, and hope that you will help us keep Embark THE outdoors adventure magazine in the Adirondacks.
