By ANDY FLYNN and MORGAN RYAN - Editor and Sports Editor (news@lakeplacidnews.com) , Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID - This week's Lake Placid News covers the first couple of days of the 2019 International Children's Winter Games, which this village is hosting Jan. 6-11.

Editor Andy Flynn and Staff Writer Griffin Kelly covered some of the beginning events, such as the opening ceremony at the Olympic Center's 1980 Rink Monday and the athletes' ice cream social at the Lake Placid Conference Center Sunday.

Griffin interviewed Wilmington twins Dariana and Danaya Patterson, who were competing in the ICWG hockey games, and their hockey mom Tammie Knox. And he spoke with ICWG volunteer Sunita Halasz of Saranac Lake about her time at the games.

Arts correspondent Steve Lester gives us an Artist Profile on Rose Chancler, who invites the public to enjoy a concert series at the Hand House in Elizabethtown titled Piano By Nature.

In addition to columns by Naj Wikoff (On the Scene) and Martha Allen (Martha Sez), we have an update from the Zonta Club of the Adirondacks.

SPORTS

The Lake Placid News sports team had a busy day Tuesday, Jan. 9 during the opening day of competition at the International Children's Winter Games. Justin Levine went to the Olympic Jumping Complex to check out the biathlon and cross-country skiing events, while Lou Reuter watched the Lake Placid boys and girls hockey teams at the Olympic Center. They both came away with good recollections and great photos. You can find a selection of these on this week's Olympic Region Sports pages, as well as on our online galleries at cu.adirondackdailyenterprise.com.

With a major international youth sporting event going on at their doorstep, the Lake Placid High School girls and boys varsity basketball seasons continued. Lou covered the boys game on Friday, Jan. 4 and Justin saw the girls take on Seton the night before.

Also in this week's Lake Placid News sports section, skating correspondent Christie Sausa takes a look back at the last few weeks of figure skating and speedskating on the oval and in the Olympic Center.

We also have World Cup updates from USA Luge and USA Bobsled and Skeleton.
