Frantz second in 10k individual

The Lake Placid and Saranac Lake Nordic ski teams wrapped up the first of two days of New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship action Monday at the Gore Mountain Ski Bowl in North Creek.

Lake Placid's Kai Frantz finished second overall in the field of 48, with a time of 35 minutes, 38.1 seconds on the 10-kilometer course. Honeoye Falls-Lima racer Teddy Warfle won the boys individual competition with a finish time of 35:23.1.

The Blue Bombers' James Flanigan (36:35.5) placed fourth and Saranac Lake's senior captain Jacob Alberga rounded out the top 10 with a time of 38:05.6.

Lake Placid and Saranac Lake are the only two teams in Section VII, and since Lake Placid has won the state title for the last four years the section was able to send nine total boys and six girls to the state championships. Saranac Lake sent six boys and Lake Placid sent three.

Saranac Lake's Nick Kelting (39:1.6) placed 17th, teammate Colter Cheney-Seymour (39:38.4) was 22nd and Adrian Hayden (40:04.2) finished in 24th. The third of Lake Placid's trio, Max Flanigan, finished 30th with a time of 41:09.3.

Brennan Nobles (44:43.1) placed 40th and Reuben Bernstein (45:59.5) rounded out the Red Storm contingent in 44th.

In the girls individual race, Anna Schreifer, of Mendon, won the race with a time of 28 minutes, 2.6 seconds. Lake Placid's Annie Rose-McCandlish was the top local finisher, taking fifth place with a time of 30:36.9. Saranac Lake's Sylvie Linck was eighth in 31:25.1.

Blue Bomber Lura Johnson (32:19.2) finished 14th and the Red Storm's Sophia Kelting (32:49.1) placed 18th while teammate Evelyn Eller (34:11.5) took 28th, followed across the line by Lake Placid's Lynn Palen (34:47.3). There were 47 girls in the field on Monday.

The NYSPHSAA Nordic championships continue Tuesday with the team relay starting at 10 a.m. at the Gore Mountain Ski Bowl.

Alpine Championships

Four skiers from Saranac Lake competed at the Gore Mountain Alpine Center on Monday, completing two runs in the slalom.

Ryley Fischer was the top Red Storm finisher in 19th place with a 1:47.79 combined run time. Teammates Mayah Land (1:58.25) placed 37th and Erica Swirsky (1:59.46) came in two spots later. Audrey Bartlett (2:06.61) rounded out the local contingent in 47th out of 51 skiers.

The Alpine events continue Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the giant slalom at Gore Mountain.
