Schulz takes second at Junior Nationals

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Lake Placid native Scott Schulz took second place in the under-20 division Monday in the 10-kilometer individual freestyle race at the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Cross Country Junior National Championships in Kincaid Park.

Schulz, who races for the Sun Valley SEF team, covered the course in 23 minutes ,52.9 seconds, which was the fifth-fastest time of the day among the 135 U18 and U20 skiers in the race.

Gus Schumacher, a U20 racer from the Alaska Winter Stars team, won the race in 22:48.2. He was followed by three U18 skiers - Johnny Hagenbuch (Sun Valley), Zander McMullen (APU) and Will Koch (Stratton Mountain School).

The New York Ski Educational Foundation was well-represented in the race, with Colton Martin (26:20.8) finishing 84th, Kai Frantz (26:55.6) in 105th, James Flanigan (27:04.0) in 106th, Van Ledger (27:05.1) in 108th, Alex Fragomeni (27:30.6) in 114th, Jacob Alberga (27:38.3) in 117th, Joseph Wilson (27:44.4) in 121st and Michael Skutt (28:21.6) in 126th.

Sylvie Linck was the top NYSEF skier in the 5k girls race, finishing 98th in 16:13.3. She competed in the U18 division.

Kendall Kramer, a U18 racer from Anchorage, won the girls race with a time of 13:09.7. Lucinda Anderson, of Loppet Nordic Racing, was second overall and the first U20 skier across the line with a time of 13:36.3.

Adrian Hayden, of Saranac Lake, placed 48th in the U16 5k race with a time of 13:54.9. Max Flanigan, of Lake Placid, was 67th in the same race with a time of 15:53.8.

Wally Magill, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, won the U16 boys race in 12:31.

Marli Damp, of Lake Placid, placed 56th in the U16 girls race with a time of 16:11.1. Teammate Annie Rose-McCandlish wasn't far behind with her 66th-place finish in 16:45.6.

Haley Brewster, of Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, won the girls U16 race in 14:15.1.

Racing will continue Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at Kincaird Park in Anchorage.
