Missing ‘The Flower Lady’ of Lake Placid

Lake Placid News

To the editor:

Conni Devlin Cross, a great person and a wonderful friend. Conni and I were born months apart and therefore started kindergarten together, went to each other's birthday parties through the years and graduated together in 1950. We went our separate ways but then were both lucky enough to return to our beloved Lake Placid. We became involved in the Alumni Association, Pee Wee Association, etc. and renewed our childhood friendship.

I do believe these were the happiest times in Conni's life. She was married to her best friend and adored her husband, Ben, and was teaching her darling children. Too soon came the time for her to retire. However, we knew she would not "retire" and soon enrough she had Ben and Leslie watering and dead-heading the few flowers on Main Street.

One day she called and said, "I convinced Norm Hess to drawn up the papers and we now have the organization called "Lake Placid Beautification, Inc." and you are the first member of the board. She then called five others and told them the same (nobody said 'no" to Conni).

Conni proved not only to be an excellent teacher but an outstanding business woman, taking an idea and turning it into a thriving nonprofit organizations. How lucky we were to have known "The Flower Lady." Lake Placid is the most beautiful village/town in the Adirondacks thanks to her.
