Lake Placid News

Robert Treat "Bob" Gettens, of Hardy Road, Wilmington, died peacefully Thursday, March 21, 2019.

Bob was born on Friday, March 13, 1931, in Bayside.

He is survived by his wife Sue Ellen, his son Robert, daughter-in-law Kim and granddaughters Ellie and Emily. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Bob loved his career as a social studies teacher at Fox Lane Middle School, Bedford. His fascination with history continued throughout his life. Upon retirement, Bob and Sue Ellen moved from North Salem to Wilmington, where he pursued a second career as an artist using oils and acrylics. Much of his art was inspired by the beauty of the Adirondacks. In addition to creating art, Bob enjoyed visiting art galleries and museums as well as reading art, architecture and design books.

Bob graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Arts degree, received his master's degree from SUNY New Paltz and a professional diploma from Queens College. He studied art throughout his life and had a degree from the New York School of Interior Design.

Bob also served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, which began his lifetime love of travel with family and friends.

Arrangements are in the care of the M.B. Clark Inc. Funeral Home, Lake Placid, where a memorial service was held on Monday, March 25 at 11 a.m. A celebration of Bob's life and artwork will be planned for the summer. In memory of Bob, contributions can be made to the Wilmington Volunteer Fire Department.
