GARDEN CLUB NEWS: Lake Placid Garden Club ready to grow

April 5, 2019
By DOT BEATTY - Lake Placid Garden Club , Lake Placid News

It is with a heavy heart to think that Conni Cross is gone. She died on March 3, 2019. As Greg Peacock, president of the Lake Placid Community Beautification Association Board said, "It is a sad day for Lake Placid."

Indeed a great lady, indeed a great loss. Conni had the vision to realize that we volunteers of the Garden Club could not accomplish her dream of a stunning Main Street with hanging floral baskets, colorful barrels and overflowing window boxes. She thus created her own organization to plant and maintain our village and surrounding areas. Thus, the Lake Placid Community Beautification Association was born.

In her own words, Conni felt it was a privilege to be whatever she could to make and keep Lake Placid beautiful year round. She did just that. Our community will miss her, although the Lake Placid Community Beautification Association lives on. We are its sister. We have similar goals to make and keep Lake Placid beautiful.

On Wednesday, April 24, the Garden Club of Lake Placid opens this gardening season with a gathering planned at Mirror Lake Inn from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. We are honored to have Nancie Battaglia present her magnificent photographs of local flowers. How motivating indeed. We welcome all. Bring a friend, and consider joining the Garden Club of Lake Placid.

Check out our website at gardencluboflakeplacid.org. The service activities range from road cleanup to seasonal floral arrangements with residents at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid and making of the village swags for December holiday decorating. There are weeding activities somewhere in there, too, some of which offer incentives after a short hour of work.

More than two-thirds of our activities are involved with member participation and community service. Find a list of all our activities on our website. Click on programs and calendar from the tool bar.

Our website has been updated. All our events, programs and activities are listed either alphabetically under programs or chronologically under calendar. Photos on the website give you a visual idea of the fun with friends. The history of the Garden Club of Lake Placid is impressive. We celebrated our 85th birthday last year.

Flowers, friends and fun ,,, what is not to like?
